This version of the Sig Sauer SSG 3000 was a short lived rifle that only existed in the Sig catalog for a few years in the early 2010s. The version that preceded it was available for a number of years and was more of a custom built, less mass market rifle. But as SIG decided to move their HQ and some of their manufacturing to the USA, they decided to target the SSG 3000 sniper rifle in more of the mainstream market and some changes and features were made and the price was reduced to about $1500 USD. Production also moved to the USA and while we were favorably impressed when we tested the SSG, it was not a great seller and the model was terminated after only a few years in production.
These SSGs have some unique features, including a rapid barrel replacement feature, and unique polymer stock with bedding block and their own unique action. The rifles shot very well with accuracy with match grade ammo commonly being sub .5 MOA, which for that price is very good. The stock has a nice contour and shape and with adjustable LOP and cheek piece. These rifles had a lot going for them, but for whatever reason, they were just not that popular. Believe it or not, we actually found one on clearance at Wal-Mart for $1200, yes, you read that correctly, at Wal-Mart here in Montana. Yep, we purchased it.
The rifles have a nice two-stage trigger on them and a muzzle brake from the factory that perhaps isn’t vert effective at reducing recoil, but it does direct the blast up to help prevent raising dust while firing. Combined with a DBM, large bolt knob, integral scope rail, 6-bolt lugs and other unique features, these rifles were a nice buy and performed very well. Because they had a limited life span and there are not a ton of them around and they were a purpose built sniper rifle, we thought it would be a great rifle to add to our Sniper Central Collection and this one has been here for a while now.
We have not yet found a good scope to mate to the rifle, we want something that uniquely fits the Sig heritage and its origins. We have thought of mounting an actual Sig scope, and that is a possibility, but we have not decided for sure.
